Located on the northern tip of the island, this massive stone fort is impossible to miss. It is the oldest complete fort in Sub-Saharan Africa, with construction beginning in 1558 in response to the Ottoman threat and taking 50 years to complete. Despite numerous attempts, the fort was never captured by enemies.  

Begin your visit with a guided tour of the fort and the underwater archaeological center. Then, ascend to the ramparts for spectacular sea and island views as the sun sets. Experience the lively island atmosphere with performances by the tribal Tufo dancers in their colorful costumes, accompanied by the energetic drumming and dance of the Shakaxa tribal group. Please note: A moderate amount of walking and standing for approximately 1 km (0.62 miles), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to fully-explore the sites visited; however walking at Fortaleza de Sao Sebastiao is at the discretion of each guest. Lightweight, comfortable modest clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection is recommended. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here, and you are trading breadth of experience for authentic interaction.
