Excursion wine & seafood tasting tour at Astoria
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Take advantage of Oregon's bounty and join us for a fresh seafood cooking demonstration and wine tasting at the famous Baked Alaska restaurant with Chef Christopher Holen.
Your three-hour tour combines the best of both (wine tasting participants must be 21 years of age or over). Although the wine industry in Oregon is only 40 years old, on a national scale, the state ranks third in the number of wineries and is the fourth largest in wine volume. However, Oregon wineries are small and produce only 5,000 cases a year of small-batch artisan wines.
Depart the pier in a school bus for the short ride to the Baked Alaska. On arrival the restaurant's Chef Christopher Holen will filet fresh salmon while discussing the various salmon species of the region. He will then demonstrate the proper way to cook salmon and make a quick sauce for accompaniment. The chef always comes up with something special for each group in addition to salmon to truly define Northwest ingredients. A sampling will be served up for all to try and you may even have the chance to get hands on. Chef Holen will also bring along some of his secret ingredients and tools from Astoria's premier kitchenware shop, "Mise en Place" kitchenware to demonstrate for the group. Items will be available for purchase. More than just a cooking demonstration, the chef will entertain, educate and inspire you to try a recipe or two when you get back home.
Once complete, you will go on a short tour of Astoria, drive by picturesque homes, and up to the Astor Column. From the highest point in Astoria you will enjoy a 360 degree view of the city. On you tour you will be treated to stories about Astoria's colorful past and historically important past.
Your tour concludes back at the pier.
Please Note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 200 feet (60 metres) with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the bus. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilize a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sunscreen are recommended. Guests must be at least 21 years of age to participate on this tour.
