Excursion Morning at christians tour at Christiansø
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Ertholmene, consisting of Frederiks Ø (Island) and the main island Christians Ø, are a small group of rocky islands and the most eastern point in Denmark. During your visit, which is a combination of exploring on your own, guided walk, music and refreshment, you have a chance to learn much more of the history of the islands and the 90 people living permanently on this small outpost far from the normal everyday life that most of us know.
Take a guided walking tour of one of the islands that has played an important role in Danish history, especially after Denmark lost the southern part of Sweden during the wars in the 1600s. Following this war loss, it was decided to build a fortification on the Christians outpost, and during the summer of 1684, the first pounding of hammers could be heard at Ertholmene. The Naval Fortress Christiansø was established in response to a naval build-up in the southern Baltic Sea.
During the 19th century, the fortress lost its importance and fell into disrepair. The former soldiers became fishermen and made their living from the sea. Soon artists found the island with the ruins and remains of the fortress attractive, and from the early 20th century groups of artists gathered here during the summer. Christiansø still receives visits from many artists, and especially during summer it is not uncommon to see painters sitting at their easels trying to capture the unique light and colors of Ertholmene.
After your half-day visit, make your way back to the ship.
