Excursion Frigate bird colony and martello tower tour at Barbuda
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Your day will start with a short 10 minute walk to Martello Tower. This 32 foot high tower and fort of 3 guns was used as a lookout along the South coast and sighting in-coming or wrecked ships. The information was signaled onward to the village of Codrington, several miles North. Next you will take a drive through the small capital of Codrington and board a motorboat to visit the famous Frigate Bird sanctuary.
Known as a bird lover's paradise, Barbuda is home to the largest Frigate bird sanctuary in the Western Hemisphere. Here you will find over 2500 of these blood-red inflating throat pouching birds nestled in the thick mangroves. During this 2-hour visit, you will also have a chance to see pelicans, terns, gulls and endemic critters like the tropical mocking bird. Most noticeable are the native Christmas bird with its bright yellow breast along with the loud noises of the endangered West Indian whistling tree duck.
Return to the pier where a bus will take you for a short 10 minute back to the ship.
