Excursion Clare island experience tour at Clare Island

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Clare Island is the largest of nearly 100 islands in Clew Bay. With its fertile terrain, the island supports a robust farming community amidst a tiny population of 130 people. The island is unique in Ireland for its two mountains (Knoclkmore and Knockaveen) which offer incredible walks and trails and spectacular scenery for those who take the challenge to climb them.

Due to the work of Robert Lloyd Praeger and the Royal Irish Academy, the island has become one of the world's most important research sites from 1907 to current day. Ancient sites have been discovered demonstrating life from the prehistoric time to early famine, with new species of flora and fauna and ancient fossils uncovered. Take a tour to see for yourself how unique this island really is.

Arrive at Clare Island and begin your visit at Grainuaile's Castle. Meet a local for a detailed talk on Clare Island and its history. Clare Island was the home of Grainuaile (Grace O'Malley), the infamous Pirate Queen of the 15th and 16th Century who was chieftain of the O'Malley Clan in a time of male domination and warring clans. Grainuaile won the respect of Queen Elizabeth and was feared from Scotland to Spain, and is now buried at home on Clare Island in the 12th Century Cistercian Abbey.

Following the interesting introduction to the Island there is time to independently walk to the heritage center and stroll along the beach. Explore the ancient archaeological sites such as the Cistercian Abbey, the megalithic tomb, iron-age huts and field systems and a fulachta fiadh (bronze age cooking sites).

After an exciting day it is then time to make the journey back to your waiting ship.
