Costa Maya, Scenic Drive, Jungle Walk

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins. En route, learn about the interesting history and unique culture of the Mayan people. Upon arrival at the parking area, begin your guided trek to the ruins, which are located deep in the Mayan jungle.


Chacchoben Mayan Ruins, Sacred Pyramids, Temples, Buildings

Chacchoben, the 'Place of Red Corn', is home to sacred pyramids, temples and other structures. During your guided tour of this fascinating archaeological site, learn about the ancient Mayan civilisation as you explore its various components. See the original red paint on the stucco walls of one of the pyramids, and the temple where a mural was found showing the astronomical positions of the planet Venus.


Gran Basamento, Scenic Drive, Costa Maya

Next, climb the stairs to access the Gran Basamento, which towers above the treetops. Here, archaeologists found ceremonial offerings dating to around 1000 B.C. In addition, learn about the local wildlife and medicinal plants utilised by modern-day descendants of the ancient Mayan people. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.2 miles (about 1.9 kilometres), at times over uneven, gravel, grassy, and cobblestone surfaces and exposed tree roots, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and stairs at the Gran Basamento. This tour is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking or sport shoes, and bring sun protection and insect repellent from the ship; sandals and high heels are prohibited. Guests must be at least two years old to participate on this tour. A US$5 fee is charged to guests utilising professional cameras and video cameras at the Chacchoben Mayan Ruins.
