Difficulty:

On this half day tour, discover the ancient city of Troy, which is one the most famous archaeological sites in the world with 4000 years of history.

Boat Ride

Together with your local guide, begin your adventure with a 40 minute ferry boat ride from the island of Bozcaada to Geyikli port, located on the mainland. Upon arrival a motorcoach will be waiting for you for the 40 minute drive from the port to the ancient site of Troy.

Troy

The historical city of Troy is currently located within the borders of modern Turkey. Once thought to be a mythical city invented by Homer in The Iliad, most historians now accept that Troy was his inspiration for the tale. Alexander the Great declared himself a descendent of Achilles, and made a pilgrimage to Troy in 334 B.C.

Although the city is thought to have been inhabited for up to 5,000 years, few structures remain intact. Remaining sites to be explored include Troy's ancient walls, some palaces and houses, the Roman Theatre, the Pillar House, believed to be the Palace of King Priam, and the giant replica of the Trojan Horse. The epic film Troy has revived interest in this piece of ancient history. The area is dotted with the remains of large houses of the Mycenaean settlement, particularly appealing for their stone masonry.

Troy Museum

After visiting the site, proceed to the newly opened Troy Museum which provides fascinating insights about Troy.

Wonder through the various exhibition rooms and enjoy the spectacular view of the site of Troy and the whole region of the Troad from the terrace.

The collections of the museum include the exhibits previously displayed in Çanakkale Archaeological Museum but also other artefacts, transferred from Istanbul Archaeological Museums and Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara. Additionally, there are 24 pieces of gold jewellery returned by the US Penn Museum in 2012. In total, the museum displays around 2,000 artefacts and has more than 40,000 artifacts in its storehouse.

At the end of the visit, return to Geyikli to catch the ferryboat to Bozcaada.
