Calais is a city of Northern France and looking out the English Channel and it is positioned near three capitals: Paris, Bruxelles and London. Calais was established by the Romans and then Dutch people settled down in this area, making it a fishermen village. The city has also been England’s property in XIV Century, when it became rich thanks to the commerce of metals and fabrics. Today Calais is an important port, mainly for its connection with the Port of Dover. In about one hour and a half by ferry, it is possible to move from one city to the other. Calais offers its visitors some remarkable attractions, such as the City Hall, whose structure is quite recent: it was built in XIX Century in neo-Flemish style. Noteworthy is the Cittadella, a fortification raised with the aim of defending the city from external attacks. A few English kings lived here, such as Edward II in XVI Century. The Museum of Fine Arts collects paintings by famous authors such as Picasso. In addition to canvas, the museum offers remarkable sculptures and installations, such as the ones by Dubuffet. Calais offers also leisure activities. Having a walk through Rue Royale, you can do shopping or try the typical food in restaurants and bars along the street. If you love lace, Calais is the right place to buy handmade curtains and tablecloths sewn according to the old tradition of this place.
