Motsuji Temple

Depart the pier, and drive for approximately one hour and 45 minutes to the Motsuji Temple which was once a large and important temple of the Tendai sect, consisting of numerous buildings Today, It is best known for its garden, one of the few remaining pure land gardens in Japan. Pure land gardens were a popular garden style during the Heian Period (794-1185), attempting to recreate the Buddhist concept of the pure land or "Buddhist paradise". Like all pure land gardens, Motsuji's garden is centered around a large pond. The garden is best enjoyed by walking along the path that leads about 500 meters around the pond's circumference. The peaceful garden has seasonal flowers and is the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Chusonji Temple

After the lunch you will drive to Chusonji Temple which is Hiraizumi's most prominent attraction, established in 850 as a temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. The temple came to prominence when the northern branch of the Fujiwara clan moved their base to Hiraizumi. At its peak, the temple consisted of a large network of dozens of buildings. With the fall of the Fujiwara at the end of the 12th century, Chusonji suffered as well so that now only two buildings from that era remain intact. The Konjikido Hall (Golden Hall) completed in 1124, is the only 12th century structure to survive in its original form at Chusonji temple. This small hall is dedicated to Amida Nyorai (the Buddha of Infinite Light) and apart from the roof, is covered with gold leaf both inside and out.

An approximate drive of 90 minute will return you to the pier.

Note

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking of approximately 0.75 miles (1.2 km), including around 120 steps, long stretches of gravel, and uneven temple paths. Both Motsuji Temple and Chusonji Temple require walking over unpaved surfaces, stone approaches, and sections of cobblestones, making this tour unsuitable for guests with limited mobility or those who use wheelchairs. There are no elevators or lifts at any of the sites. Access to Chusonji Temple in particular involves sustained walking uphill through forested temple grounds, and guests must be prepared for moderate inclines and extended standing during explanations. Comfortable, flat closed-toe shoes, lightweight clothing, and sun protection are strongly recommended. Local facilities may be basic, and Japanese yen is required for any personal purchases, as credit card acceptance is not guaranteed at temple shops. The tour sequence may vary depending on local conditions, crowding, or seasonal restrictions. Local guides in the region may speak with noticeable accents; guests are encouraged to be patient and flexible. Weather in Hiraizumi can change quickly, and the temple grounds can become slippery when wet; caution is advised.
