Excursion Tacaguma chimp sanctuary tour at Freetown

Jumbled and beautifully chaotic, set amidst ocean and white sand beaches, Freetown is a vibrant port city and the capital of Sierra Leone in West Africa. This colorful city is a bundle of fascinating contradictions, with peaceful beaches adjacent to its gritty streets in this busy major port on the Atlantic Ocean. Freetown is known also for its history, particularly its role in the slave trade from Africa to the Americas. Freetown was founded as a city in 1792 by Lieutenant John Clarkson and African American ex-slaves, serving as a haven for freed (and freeborn) African Americans and other liberated African and Caribbean settlers.

Drive up to the mountains to visit the Tacugama Chimps Sanctuary. Founded in 1995 by two conservationists, the reserve was initially created to enforce wildlife laws and rescue and rehabilitate orphaned chimpanzees. The sanctuary has since grown into an organization that supports a wide range of conservation activities. The Tacugama sanctuary cares for close to 100 chimpanzees on-site.

Drive to a local hotel for lunch and afterwards transfer to a nearby venue to attend the Amputee soccer match, where the Salone Flying Stars amaze spectators with their athleticism. Return to the ship.
