Excursion Mona - discovery in style tour at Hobart

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Indulge your senses on this half-day exploration of Australia's provocative Museum of Old and New Art (MONA).

Ferry Transfer

Depart the pier for the short transfer to the ferry terminal. Travel by ferry in the Posh Pit across the Derwent River to the MONA. Enjoy the sights of scenic Hobart from an exclusive lounge and separate deck with extra comfortable seating, table service and complimentary canapes, pastries and locally produced beverages.

Museum of Old & New Art

After the half hour crossing, you will be given a hosted introduction to Mona. Explore the Museum of New Art and discover what has made this such a talked about and famous collection. This radically innovative institution that opened on the banks of the Derwent River in January 2011, showcases the largest private collection of art in Australia. The property is a cultural haven where outstanding art, architecture and antiquities are fused with the surrounding, natural landscape. Its $100 million private collection focuses heavily on themes of sex and death, and is presented in a uniquely creative setting, a purpose-built $75 million edifice that challenges our notions of what an art museum should be. There are none of the traditional 'white cube' gallery spaces. Instead, labyrinthine passageways and Escher-like stairways connect three underground levels. The artwork is not labelled; instead you are each given an iPod touch called the 'O' that permits random exploration.

After time in the museum, re-board the ferry back to Hobart to your waiting transfer to the ship.
