Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Experience the splendid, Old World beauty of Kalmar and its spectacular castle during this memorable, half-day sightseeing excursion.
Kalmar City Centre, City Park and Kalmar Castle
Depart the pier for the short, scenic drive through Kalmar, one of Sweden's oldest cities. Kalmar's 17th-century city centre is home to a wealth of well-preserved architecture and historical landmarks combined with modern art and design. Pass by Guest Harbour en route to City Park, a romantic, English-style garden featuring many unusual plants and flowers, and offering stunning views of Kalmar Castle, an imposing palace with grand watchtowers.
City Park and Kalmar Castle
After a photo stop at City Park, re-board your coach and continue on to Kalmar Castle. Perched on a tiny island just off the coast, the castle hosted the 1397 signing of the Kalmar Union, which united Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Upon arrival, walk across the old wind jetty and take a guided tour of the castle, followed by some free time for independent exploration.
Tripp, Trapp and Trull, City Hall and Cathedral
Next, re-board your coach and continue your panoramic drive past the 'Europa Nostra' water tower and one of the most famous sights in Kalmar, the 17th-century houses known as 'Tripp, Trapp and Trull'. Upon arrival at 'Stortorget', or 'Big Square', see the impressive 17th century Kalmar Cathedral, the biggest baroque church in Sweden. On the opposite side of the square is City Hall, built in the Dutch-Renaissance style. Following a short, guided tour of the Cathedral, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier, passing through the City Gate en route.
Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, with cobblestone surfaces around the Cathedral, a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 80 steps to access the different levels in the castle. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair; however, not all areas of Kalmar Castle are wheelchair-accessible. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a light jacket or sweater from the ship. Guests must be at least 10 years old to participate on this tour. An inside visit to the Cathedral may not be possible during church services. The tour sequence may vary.
