Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Take a stroll through the history of Rauma during this picturesque, half-day excursion to its two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Rauma, Sammallahdenmäki, Forest Walking Tour
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to the burial cairn area of Sammallahdenmäki, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated in a wooded forest, this unique site embodies the religious and burial traditions of the people who lived in western Finland during the Scandinavian Bronze Age (1500 B.C.-50 B.C.). Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour through a portion of the beautiful forest and enjoy the peacefulness of your surrounds.
Kivikylän Kotipalvaamo, Guided Tour and Tasting
Following your forest walk, proceed on foot or by bus for a visit to Kivikylän Kotipalvaamo. Located next to Sammallahdenmäki, this company produces a variety of meat products utilising 100% Finnish ingredients and is renowned for their meatballs. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour. Observe the meat-smoking process, smell the tempting aromas emanating from the smoke sauna, the traditional method of smoking the meats utilised in the company's meat products, and sample their sausages. Leaving Kivikylän Kotipalvaamo, re-board your coach and head to Old Rauna, an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Old Rauma, City Centre, Wooden Houses and Buildings, Church of the Holy Cross
Upon arrival at the city centre, take a guided walking tour of this old Nordic wooden town. Narrow, meandering streets and lanes are characteristic of Old Rauma, as they follow medieval routes. Typical features include asymmetric plots, with their impressive gates and wooden fences. Old Rauma is the best-preserved area of wooden houses in the northern countries. The oldest buildings were built after a great fire in the 17th and 18th centuries. This historical area is full of life, and bustles with locals who live and work here. During your guided walking tour of Old Rauma, see historic landmarks and visit the beautiful Church of the Holy Cross. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.
Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately two miles (about 3.2 kilometres), at times over uneven, cobblestone, and slippery surfaces, hills and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the sites visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket from the ship. Guests must be at least 12 years old to participate on this tour. In the event services are taking place at the Church of the Holy Cross, an interior visit is not possible.
