The remote land of Tana Toraja is known for having one of the most bizarre and unique cultures in the world. This highland region is home to lush rice terraces, misty mountains, and a village famous for its macabre culture. See its unique cliffside graves, karst mountains, decorative burial sites, and learn about the significance of it all. The cliffside graves at Lemo are one of Tanah Toraja’s most famous sights. The first thing you’re greeted by is a row of creepy Tau-Tau statues staring down at you, as if they’re guarding the graves. In Kete Kesu village see a collection of Toraja traditional houses (tongkonan) with a cave cemetery in the background. Visit Bori village which is a grave site in north Toraja with megalithic stones that were stood upright and used as headstones.

Please note: This excursion involves an extensive amount of driving, for about 2.5 hours each way, and an extensive amount of walking (approximately 5 km/ 3 miles) over uneven terrain and steps to negotiate. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility. Deaths and funerals play an important part in the Torajan culture and the elaborate funeral ceremonies can go on for days. Therefore this itinerary is subject to change depending upon whether there is a funeral ceremony. Guests are recommended to wear light, comfortable clothing, walking shoes, sun protection and hat. To respect local culture it is requested that all wear or bring trousers in the event there is a ceremony to be properly dressed, and that women are "reasonably covered up, with no short skirts or shorts and shoulders covered. Please ask for permission when taking picture of local people.
