Saltfjord, Holandsvika, Ferry-Ride across the Holandsfjord

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 2.5-hour drive to Holandsvika. En route, go around the Saltfjord and over Knaplundsøya to the mainland. Upon arrival at Holandsvika, embark a small ferry boat for the short ride across the Holandsfjord. After disembarking on the other side, board a small local bus to get closer to the Svartisen Glacier.

Svartisen Glacier and Engenbreen Glacier

Svartisen is translated as 'the black ice'. It refers to the deep blue colour of the ice, and the contrast between it, the white snow and newer ice on the plateau. At approximately 143 square miles (about 370 square kilometres), the massive Svartisen it is Norway's second-largest glacier. At the same time, it is the lowest glacier in mainland Europe, with the lowest point approximately 65.6 feet (about 20 meters) above sea level. Svartisen's highest point is approximately 5,131 feet (about 1,564 meters) above sea level, and the part known as the Engenbreen Glacier is incredibly thick, at approximately 1,476 feet (about 450 metres) in width, with 60 glacier tongues.

Brestua Glacier-Viewing and Lunch

Depending on road conditions, your viewpoint stop is either made at Brestua (Glacier Lodge) or closer to the Svartisen Glacier. Next, proceed for a buffet-style lunch at Brestua, which is located on the side of the fjord and offers stunning views of your surrounds. After lunch, re-board the local bus for the return drive to the ferry and a short ride back across the Holandsfjord. After disembarking, board your coach and commence the approximately 2.5-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 219 yards (about 200 metres), at times over uneven and gravel surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and bus, and embark/disembark the ferry. Walking at the Brestua Viewpoint is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests prone to seasickness, guests with a fear of tunnels, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Infants and small children are not permitted on this tour. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe and non-slip walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket from the ship. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.
