Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Experience the remarkable medieval sights of the smallest Republic in the world, San Marino. With imposing defensive towers and a breath-taking view atop steep slopes, it is an impressive citadel where its residents are very proud of their independent status. A guided walking tour introduces you to this small country. Enjoy a wonderful three course typical lunch before returning to the ship.
San Marino
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to the Republic of San Marino. Upon arrival at the parking area, a short stroll takes you to Porta San Francesco. Your walking tour begins with a visit to the Piazza della Libertà, which overlooks the Republic's Western territory and region of Montefeltro. Pass by the 1896 statue of Lady Liberty en route to the exterior of the Government Palace, or 'Palazzo del Governo', seat of San Marino's Grand Council. Here, you may see the changing of the San Marino Guards. Just above the square is the Neo-classical Basilica of San Marino.
Following your guided tour, ample free time is made available for independent exploration, shopping amidst the charming alleys of the Old Town, purchasing unique stamps and coins of the Republic, or visiting the Church of San Francesco. For a small fee, you may also opt to have a San Marino stamp in your passport.
Lunch and Return to the ship.
Next, proceed for a three-course lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, walk back to Piazza della Libertà and return to the parking area, then re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to ship in Ravenna Porto Corsini.
