Explore beautiful Magdalena Island, a natural reserve created to protect Magellan Penguins, Cormorants, and other indigenous birds. Punta Arenas is the launching point for a boat trip to the Isla Magdalena to see the more than 100,000 Magellanic penguins at the Monumento Natural Los Pingúinos. A single trail, marked off by rope, is accessible to humans to discover the teeming birdlife here.
Begin your tour by boarding the vessel at the local pier navigate across the Strait of Magellan to reach Magdalena Island. Upon arriving, enjoy the rare opportunity to observe one of the largest penguin colonies in Southern Chile. Please note: A 90-minute boat cruise, with a moderate amount of walking at Magdalena Island over natural, sometimes uneven terrain and a few steps to negotiate to embark/disembark the boat. The island is a nature reserve, and facilities are limited. Passengers will disembark via a ramp directly onto shore, rocky beach area making this tour not suitable for guests with limited mobility. Weather is unpredictable in this region and windy, rainy weather can be expected. Rough sea conditions can be experienced on the journey to Magdalena Island; passengers prone to seasickness should take this into consideration. Dress in layers with sturdy, closed-toe, waterproof shoes/boots, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket, hat, and scarf.
