Excursion Macedon ranges rural village and wine tasting tour at Melbourne

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Bustling, modern Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria state. Inland to its north, the picturesque rural district known as Macedon Ranges is the capital of charming country towns and high-achieving vineyards. On this captivating excursion, you'll cross rolling hills and verdant landscapes to become fully immersed in that rural experience.

A freeform visit to Woodend

Boarding a comfortable coach at Station Pier, spend the first 75 minutes traversing scenic terrain on the way to the small town of Woodend – where, after an orientation, you’ll be set loose with about two hours to explore at your leisure. The air is fresh, the streets are unbusy, the quaint shops are ripe for browsing, and the local cafes' chalkboard menus brim with temptations. It’s all part of appreciating the relaxed, down-to-earth atmosphere of this delightful country burg – so close to Melbourne, yet so far away.

Structured wine tasting

Just 15 minutes farther up the road is Destination Two of your Macedon Ranges saga: the acclaimed Hanging Rock Winery, set against a stunning backdrop of the iconic pinnacles of Hanging Rock Reserve. Over the next 1.25 hours, you’ll be guided through an artisanal wine tasting session, sampling some 6-8 of the vineyard's finest white, red, and rose offerings and learning about the craft and unique terroir behind each vintage. A curated tasting board of local cheeses complements the wines’ variations perfectly. After this sensory journey concludes, your sightseeing journey resumes as you once again roll through the Macedon Ranges on the way back to your waiting ship in Melbourne.
