After a short walk to the floating pier, embark your awaiting boat for the approximately 70-minute ride to Hesteyri Island. Impressive, steep, snow-flecked mountains and quiet, secluded coves highlight the beautiful landscape of the Jokulfirdir Fjord. In the late-1940s, all 80 inhabitants of Hesteyri made the decision to move away. At the time, they lived without telephone, electricity and roads. By 1952, the village was completely abandoned.

Upon arrival at Hesteyri Island, disembark your boat and take a guided stroll around the abandoned village of Hesteyri. Along the way, stop by the old doctor's house for traditional Icelandic refreshments. At the conclusion of your visit, embark your boat for the approximately 70-minute ride back to the floating pier, and commence the short walk back to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately one mile (about 1.6 kilometres), at times over uneven, natural, gravel, grassy, and slippery surfaces, with a gangway to negotiate to embark/disembark the boat, and a steep staircase to get downstairs and access the seating area. In the event tidal measures at Hesteyri Island require landing by Zodiac-boat, passengers are loaded from the transfer boat to the Zodiac-boats. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with neck and/or back problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests with a fear of heights, guests who suffer from vertigo, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with flat, sturdy, closed-toe and non-slip walking shoes, and bring sun protection, bottled water and a weatherproof jacket from the ship.
