Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Indulge your senses with the gourmet flavours and history of the remote, beautiful and sustainable fishing village of Suðureyri during this immersive, half-day sightseeing excursion.
The Westfjords are renowned for their top-quality products and modern food traditions with a local twist. This tour takes you on a journey to the eco-friendly village of Suðureyri. Blend in with the residents of the small fishing village of Sudureyri and sample local delights on this charming tour.
The inhabitants of the Westfjords have often had to fight for survival in their unforgiving surroundings. Whether it be the isolation caused by blocked mountain roads in the winter, destructive avalanches, or the decline in fishing in the surrounding waters.
In this 3-hour tour, you will learn how the village was built up, about eco-friendly fishing methods, and everything you need to know regarding the fishing industry. Discover the process from fishing to finished dishes all around the world. You will get to taste fish in three traditional ways Icelanders like to have it; fish cakes with sauce tartar, the famous Icelandic fish jerky and smoked or cured salmon with bread and sauce.
Sudureyri is now principally a base for speed-boat fishermen, who sail swiftly out to sea, returning to land with fresh, high-quality catches. Such is the speed and efficiency of their entire operation that the local catch has arrived in the markets in Europe just 36 hours later. Sudureyri is also the only community in the area that enjoys a supply of geothermal hot water, providing enough to heat all the buildings in the village as well as the outdoor swimming pool, which is the only one of its kind in the area, whilst a hydroelectric power station ensures residents have access to hydro-powered electricity.
Enjoy some free time in this pretty village before returning to the pier.
