Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Experience the splendid landmarks and flavours of Bologna during this full-day, self-guided excursion to its historic centre. Discover, at your leisure, the symbols of the city and step back in time.

Bologna and Piazza Maggiore

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 90-minute drive to Bologna. Upon arrival, take a stroll to the monumental heart of the city, Piazza Maggiore, where ample time is made available for you to explore the spectacular sights and sumptuous cuisine of this breath-taking town independently.

Palazzos and Basilica of San Petronio

Piazza Maggiore is home to Bologna's most beautiful ancient palaces and churches, including the Palazzo del Podestá, Palazzo Comunale and adjoining Piazza del Nettuno, the Palace of King Enzo, built in 1244. Here, admire the Neptune Fountain, a masterpiece by the sculptor Giambologna. The most impressive building in the square is the Basilica of San Petronio. Built between the 14th and 17th centuries, it is one of the largest basilicas in Christendom and finest examples of Gothic architecture in Italy. The wide interior features important works of art by several renowned artists, and a fascinating sundial on the nave floor.

Via Archiginnasio and University Palace

Continuing along Via Archiginnasio, admire the harmonious palace that once served as a university campus. Upon entering the cloister at the ground floor, see many fascinating and colourful coats of arms of noble families, whose young members attended the first University courses. The 'Anatomic Theatre' offers a unique insight into the first courses studied at a time when medicine and the human body was something entirely to discover.

Leaning Towers and Lunch

From here, you may choose to proceed to one of the most renowned features of Bologna, the Leaning Towers, which symbolize the city. You may opt to climb the 447 steps to access the top.

At any time during your self-guided visit, stop for a typical Bolognese lunch on your own. At a predetermined place and time, meet your tour escort, return to the coach on-foot and commence the approximately 90-minute drive back to the pier.
