Heading into Mount Maunganui, a top holiday destination for Kiwis, we visit a boutique ice cream maker to try their unique flavors of ice cream, (great coffee too). What a way to start the day!
Driving along Pilot Bay’s harbour beach past the iconic Mauao volcano then the stunning Mount Maunganui Main Beach. Next, we’re off for “Smoko”, a New Zealand institution, this is the “tradies” morning tea break, all will be revealed at a popular local food destination.
A scenic drive across the harbour bridge, through Tauranga as we transition from urban to rural. Welcome to The Good Farm, where we get a closeup look at a tiny dairy farm, new calves and lambs plus an organic market garden.
Specialty Food Shops, Tastings of Local Specialties, Kiwifruit and Avocado Orchards
Traveling a back country road we view the extensive kiwifruit and avocado orchards, both are a significant part of the horticulture industries in the Bay of Plenty. Surprise, our next stop is a small private avocado orchard, take a short stroll amongst the trees with Gary and ‘Edi the Dog’. At the ‘Man-shed’ you will imbibe an array of culinary products including smashed avocado mousse plus other items that are exclusively produced here in the Bay.
Countryside Drive, Photo Stops, 'Bay of Plenty'
Continue travelling through the Kiwifruit Capital of the World, where cultivation of this amazing super fruit was first grown commercially in New Zealand, to the seaside settlement of Maketu. Maketu is a place of significant cultural history and abundant Kai Moana.
Before heading back to the pier enjoy a light lunch right on the beach at the magical Maketu Beachside café, great food and stunning views.
At the conclusion of your tour, commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.
