Excursion Ancient traditions of tahuata: dance & artisan heritage tour at Tahuata

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Tahuata is the smallest inhabited island in the Marquesas archipelago and was the first island in the archipelago to receive European visitors when Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira arrived in 1595.

Step into the authentic heart of the Marquesas on Tahuata, home to some of the most intact traditional cultural practices in French Polynesia where ancient customs remain vibrantly alive.

Your journey begins with a traditional welcome ceremony featuring the powerful mave mai (welcome chant) and haka, warrior dances that have been performed on this sacred ground for generations, featuring unique rhythms and movements specific to the archipelago's warrior heritage.

Witness master artisans demonstrate their craft – bone carvings and tapa (bark cloth) in particular – continuing traditions that have made the Marquesas famous throughout Polynesia.

The highlight of your experience is a mesmerizing 45-minute dance performance showcasing the distinctive Marquesan style, characterized by powerful movements and rhythmic percussion that tells stories of ancient warriors, gods, and island legends.

Your journey through this small but culturally rich island is made comfortable by motor coach transportation, allowing you to focus on the extraordinary cultural experiences awaiting you.

There are no organized tours being offered during the call to Hiva Oa island, guests may explore all the local sights on their own.
