Excursion The buried city & the observatory tour at Little Bay

Cruise line: Silversea
Difficulty:

Combining visits to the monitoring station where ever-attuned observers keep a close eye on the Soufriere Hills volcano with a guided drive through the abandoned streets of Montserrat’s prior capital city, now buried under 40 feet of ash – this excursion is the ideal outing for anyone with an interest in vulcanology.

Monserrat Volcano Observatory
The exploring begins with a 20-minute drive into the island’s interior to visit the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, the nerve center responsible for monitoring volcanic rumblings (or quietude, much preferred) 24 hours a day. Watch a gripping documentary that relays the story of the Soufriere Hills volcano during its most active phase in the mid-1990s. And interact with the staff whose 24/7 efforts have earned this the title of most heavily monitored volcano in the world.

A 20-minute drive further into the aftermath region of the volcano brings you to the hauntingly preserved ruins of Plymouth, once the vibrant capital of Montserrat. Surrounded by remnants of dramatic pyroclastic flows, this 'Buried City' today lies frozen in time beneath over 40 feet of volcanic ash. As you travel along eerily quiet streets, your driver-guide will point out key places of interest and share stories of how this once-thriving city boasted a lifestyle well ahead of its time among Caribbean islands. After about 45 minutes spent in this unearthly environment, the drive back to the port will feel like a definite return to civilization.
