Santa Cruz de la Palma, Silk Museum, Silk Production Process
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to El Paso, located in the centre of La Palma. Upon arrival, head to the Silk Museum, located in one of the town's most historical buildings. During your guided tour, learn about the art, history, and tradition of silk production on the island, which dates from the 16th century and was of great importance to the local economy. At one time, silk was made on all of the Canary Islands, but, since the 19th century, El Paso is the only place still producing it. They utilise an old-fashioned, labour-intensive technique, the only facility in Europe that still does, and you can observe most of this process during your visit.
Caldera de Taburiente National Park, Cumbrecita Lookout
Next, re-board your coach and continue on to Caldera de Taburiente National Park, a protected area of volcanic nature with surprisingly large amounts of water both underground and on the surface. From the Cumbrecita Lookout, enjoy breath-taking panoramic views of this exquisite National Park and its approximately 5.6-mile (about nine-kilometre) natural basin. An optional short, guided stroll through the park's endemic vegetation is available.
Concepción Lookout, Santa Cruz de la Palma, Breñas Valley, Eastern Island's Slope
Afterward, re-board your coach and head for a final stop at La Concepción Lookout. From here, take in spectacular panoramic views over Santa Cruz de la Palma, the Breñas Valley, and the entire eastern slope of the island. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.
