Depart the pier with your expert naturalist and cultural guide for a scenic, approximately 1.75-hour sightseeing drive that explores the captivating geographical, cultural, and natural highlights of Haines and its surrounds. Begin with a drive through historic Fort Seward, one of the first US military bases in Alaska, then heads up the Haines Highway towards Canada.

Next, pass through the world-famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, which boasts the world’s largest gathering of bald eagles, then over the Canadian border. Your route ascends above the treeline, where towering peaks loom above the highway. Along the way, enjoy breath-taking panoramic views of glaciers, cascading waterfalls, and wide expanses of alpine tundra. During the peak of the summer, there are a multitude of wildflowers found here. Golden eagles, ptarmigans, snowshoe hares, grizzly bears, and other endemic wildlife frequent the area.

Typically, the hike ranges from approximately two miles-six miles (about 3.2 kilometres-9.6 kilometres) in duration, with a vertical ascent/descent of approximately 500 feet (about 152 metres) during the hike. Along the way, a stop is made for a picnic lunch with an exquisite view of your surrounds, and snacks are provided to keep your energy going for the extended hike. During the early part of the season, you may encounter patches of snow. After an invigorating hike in the alpine tundra of British Columbia, re-board your coach and commence the approximately two-hour drive back across the U.S. border before returning to the pier in Haines.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately two miles-six miles (about 3.2 kilometres-9.6 kilometres), at times over uneven, gravel, slippery, and natural surfaces and steep inclines. If crossing over water using the rocks in the water is not possible, guests may have to step in water up to six inches (about 15 centimetres) in depth. This tour is recommended for active guests in good physical condition. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with back and/or neck problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests with a fear of heights, guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with flat, sturdy, and closed-toe hiking boots they won’t mind getting wet, and bring sun protection, a weatherproof jacket, hat, and gloves, raingear, a small backpack for personal items, bottled water, and US Dollars or credit cards for purchases from the ship. Guests must carry their passports and ship’s ID at all times. Guests must be at least seven years old to participate on this tour; minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years old. Guests must be at least 21 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. Trekking poles are provided. Although frequently encountered on this type of tour, wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. The driving time between the pier and sights visited is approximately 1.75-two hours in each direction. A signed waiver is required to participate on this tour. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
