Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Discover the Old-World splendour of Scotland during this half-day tour of Edinburgh City, and a visit to Edinburgh Castle.
Edinburgh City Tour
Depart the pier for the brief transfer to Edinburgh, take an orientation drive through the streets of the outer city before heading to the centre of Edinburgh. Continue through the historic Georgian New Town and admire its beautiful architecture, then see the famous Princes Street, which features excellent shops along the north side and a scenic view of the south.
Edinburgh Castle
Next, visit Edinburgh Castle, which stands on an extinct volcanic rock overlooking and dominating the city's skyline. The oldest section of the castle dates from the 12th century. During your tour, see the castle's many different architectural styles that reflect its importance throughout the history of Scotland. In addition, view the Crown Jewels of Scotland and Stone of Destiny.
Edinburgh Old Town
Leaving the castle, proceed east through the Old Town, which straddles the volcanic ridge between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyrood house. The Royal Mile is a thoroughfare linking the castle with the palace; at one mile (1.6 kilometres) in length, it forms the Medieval centre of the city. Drive through this area and see some of the most important historic buildings and monuments, including the Palace of Holyrood, the official residence of the Queen in Edinburgh. To the north is the New Town, an area that was established in the 1790s when wealthy merchants began expanding the city outside of its Medieval walls. Here, marvel at the most beautiful concentration of Georgian architecture anywhere in Britain. Your tour concludes back at the pier.
