Manaus, Museum of the Amazon, Adolpho Ducke Reserve

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 50-minute drive to the Museum of the Amazon (MUSA Manaus). MUSA Manaus was inaugurated in 2009 with an objective of becoming a centre for the dissemination and popularisation of research and science to the public, as well as providing an enchanting space for leisure and learning. This living, open-air museum is located inside the Adolpho Ducke Reserve, an approximately 24,710-acre (about 10,000-hectare) area of primary forest located north of Manaus. The ecosystems, fauna, and flora here have been studied for over 60 years by researchers from the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA).

Plants, Trees, Palms, Birds, Orchids, Flowers, Pollinators, Bromeliads, Butterflies, Aquarium

The Musa Botanical Garden is committed to disseminating their research to the public. To make knowledge the lever of conservation and valorisation of the patrimony that nature bequeathed to us, and enable visitors to view plants, birds, insects, flowers, and pollinators in their natural habitat. Its tracks, cut into the dense tissue of trees, palms, and vines, are illuminated by lights and shadows that reveal the dazzling diversity of shades of green, and hide insects, birds, and pollinators. In prepared experimental laboratories, you can see the curious microworld magnified. Included are orchids, bromeliads, butterflies, a serpentarium, aquarium with Amazonian fish, an arachnids’ area, and a slice of the life of the Amazon Indians.

Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden, Observation Tower, Exhibition Stands & Pavilions, Shopping

The Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden can also be found inside the reserve. Created in situ in 2002, this wonderful garden still grows and surprises to this day. It is equipped with towers to observe the forest at different heights, and includes exhibition stands and pavilions in which themes dear to the indigenous cultures of the past and the present are revealed and celebrated. Walking up the 242 steps of the approximately 137-foot-high (about 42-metre-high) Observation Tower is rewarded with a beautiful sunrise and expansive, 360-degree views of the jungle from above the treetops.

Savour some local fruit and snack, browse the gift shoppe, then re-board your coach and commence the approximately 50-minute drive back to the pier.
