Excursion Roque nublo hiking tour at Las Palmas
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
This full-day activity tour takes you to Gran Canaria's second highest peak, Roque Nublo, for an adventurous guided hike to admire its iconic profile and catch glimpses of the island's spectacular inland scenery and beyond.
Roque Nublo, Ayacata
Depart the pier by coach and enjoy the hour's scenic drive heading inland towards Gran Canaria's second highest peak, Roque Nublo. The name translates as "clouded rock", since the iconic 70-meter red basalt monolith at the summit is often wreathed in clouds or fog which set in and disappear uncannily. Set off with your guide for the hike up the trail and appreciate detailed explanations of the different species of native flora as well as famous medicinal plants found along the old royal road that you are following. Having reached the plateau at the top, which stands at over 1750 meters above sea level, enjoy well-earned breathtaking panoramic views.
Roque Nublo itself is the result of a volcanic eruption about 4.5 million years ago and today is an icon of the island as well as a protected national monument. Admire from on high the Canarian forest vegetation consisting mainly of pine trees and shrubbery. On a clear day you may be able to see Teide volcano on the neighboring island of Tenerife. After feasting your eyes on the views, enjoy a healthy light snack before descending to the historic village of Ayacata. Wander around the village on your own before boarding the coach for the drive back to the pier.
