Excursion Polignano & mr volare's white cliff tour at Bari
Cruise line: SilverseaDifficulty:
Polignano a Mare is to be considered as one of the most romantic places in Apulia, built at the top of a natural spur and surrounded by marine caves.
Home to Mr Domenico Modugno who wrote his famous song NEL BLU DIPINTO DI BLU, that is to say VOLARE for most of us, this little town is really worth a visit.
You're not going to explore art and monuments in this case, but you're going to see how mother-nature built up its own masterpieces using local soft limestone and sea waters as its materials.
Try to take a stroll through Polignano's town centre and you will understand the reason why Mr Modugno wrote his song here...
Perched at the top of a rocky cliff, surrounded by a very blue-green sea "working" very patiently upon the soft local limestone, Polignano is a real little jewel.
The sea has actually built up hundreds of deep and high marine caves, whose tops have been paved and transformed into amazing terraces: the result is a very original seafront where you actually will enjoy panoramic views over the shore and the coastal villages around.
Your walking tour begins from the bus drop off point location over the panoramic terraces. From here you will be able to view the crystal clear sea water and go with the first breath-taking view onto the marine caves which characterize Polignano.
Follow your tour guide and explore Polignano's characteristic town centre, with its winding little streets covered with flowers, a typical Mediterranean atmosphere. Here people are used to decorate their homes both inside and outside, just because climate is so mild that locals are allowed to transform a public open space into family's or neighborhood's garden.
You will bump into narrow paths carved out of the old defensive walls and fabulous panoramic views over the grottoes excavated by the seawater.
Your guided walking tour will take you then at the bottom of a cliff to enjoy a pleasant stroll through the so called LAMA MONACHILE, the ancient river bed that many people use to lie in the sun during summertime.
A few steps from here you and will be able to get to see the little nearby square where a bronze statue dedicated to Domenico Modugno is welcoming visitors with his open arms.
Do not forget, during your free time and before walking back to bus parking, to taste a delicious "gelato".
Driving back to the pier catch sight of the crystal clear waters as well as of the Apulian old olive trees while "painting" in your mind, again, Mr Volare's white cliffs!
