Excursion Arica & environs tour at Arica

Discover the highlights and wonders of Arica, Chile's northernmost city located at the mouth of Azapa River. Arica is referred to as the "City of Eternal Spring" for its year-round mild and sunny weather, this city nestled in the Azapa Valley, a fertile oasis in the northern extreme of the Atacama Desert and a mere 11 miles from the Peruvian border.

Your expedition commences with a 45-minute scenic drive along the coast, passing by the Lisera and El Laucho beaches towards Azapa Valley, well-known for its olive production. On the way, view amazing geoglyphs in the distance - these are unique drawings of human and animal forms created centuries ago by the native aboriginals, scratching the salty surface of the brightly colored rocks. Make a short stop near Cerro Sombrero to allow a closer view and photo opportunity of the geoglyphs.

Continue to visit the San Miguel de Azapa Archaeological Museum, with an interesting display of artifacts, including the remains of the oldest Chinchorro mummies on earth, dating 6000-8000 BC. Continue the expedition with a 40-minute drive back to Arica to reach El Morro de Arica, a massive promontory towering over the city, to enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the bay. The Morro is the northernmost peak of the Coastal Range and the site of the decisive battle in the War of the Pacific.

Stop at Plaza Colón for a visit of the main highlights in the downtown area, San Marcos Cathedral, a 19th century gothic building designed by Gustav Eiffel. Take some time at leisure to stroll around before re-boarding the coach to take the short return to the pier.
