Arica is a city that has been inhabited for almost 7,000 years. During pre-historic times, different peoples inhabited the coast, and then the valleys of Arica.
Alacran island
Depart from the pier for a short drive up to Alacran island. This place used to be an island up until mid-1960s when it was joined to the continent, creating a peninsula. It was used by ancient peoples to fish, and collect shellfish for their daily meals. Guano collection was also important since pre-Columbian times. When this territory belonged to Peru, and during the war of Independence of Peru, a small fortress was built here. Still some remnants of the fortress can be seen. The collection of guano lasted until the island was joined to the continent as birds migrated. Walk around the island to appreciate how it was seen by the different peoples.
El Morro viewpoint
Next, drive to El Morro viewpoint. At the top, there is one of the largest Chilean flags, and also a military museum, which is not included during the visit. There is a large statue of Christ, names Christ of Concord, or Christ of Peace. It commemorates the peace treaty signed by Perú and Chile in 1929
Walk up to the statue and take your time to take pictures of this nice viewpoint.
